CHAPTER 9. BUILDINGS.*
Sec. 9-5.75. Amendments to the California plumbing code.
The amendments to the California Plumbing Code as referenced
in Section 9-70 are as follows:
(a) Amend Section 609.3.1 in its entirety to read as
follows:
609.3.1. Water piping shall not be installed in or under a
concrete slab within a building without obtaining special approval from the
building official. Such approval shall be granted contingent upon the existence
of conditions that would make it infeasible to place the piping above the slab.
Piping approved to be placed under a concrete slab shall be of continuous
copper, without joints, and shall be installed in a chase, sleeve or duct, or
shall be machine-wrapped pipe surrounded in a bed of four inches of clean washed
sand. All ferrous piping used underground shall have a protective coating of an
approved type.
(b) Amend Section 604 to read as follows:
Section 604.0 Materials
604.1 Water distribution pipe, building supply water pipe and
fittings shall be of brass, copper, cast iron, galvanized malleable iron,
galvanized wrought iron, galvanized steel, or other approved materials.
Asbestos-cement, CPVC, PE, PVC, or PEX water pipe manufactured to recognized
standards may be used for cold water distribution systems outside a building.
CPVC, PEX water pipe, tubing, and fittings, manufactured to recognized standards
may be used for hot and cold water distribution systems within a building. All
materials used in the water supply system, except valves and similar devices
shall be of a like material, except where otherwise approved by the
Administrative Authority.
(c) Amend Section 604.11 to read as follows:
604.11 PEX. Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing shall be
marked with the appropriate standard designation(s) listed in Table 14-1 for
which the tubing has been listed or approved. PEX tubing shall be installed in
compliance with the provisions of this section.
(d) Amend Section 604.11.1 to read as follows:
604.11.1 PEX Fittings. Metal Insert Fittings and Metal
Compression Fittings used with PEX tubing shall be manufactured to and marked in
accordance with the standards for the fittings in Table 14-1.
(e) Amend Section 604.11.2 to read as follows:
604.11.2 Water Heater Connections. PEX tubing shall not be
installed within the first eighteen (18) inches (457 mm) of piping connected to
a water heater.
