  • Salinas Wins in Court of Appeal
    November 30, 2011

    The California Court of Appeal for the Sixth Appellate District has unanimously affirmed the award of attorney fees and costs in the amount of $229,423 to the City of Salinas in a long-standing litigation with plaintiffs, Angelina Morfin Vargas and Mark Dierolf, over a 2002 ballot measure to repeal City utility taxes.

Our website updates EVERY HOUR with animals coming and going out of the shelter. You can also find licensing information, Frequently Asked Questions and links to other pet related sites. PLUS if you find your pet on-line and come into the shelter within 72 hours of pet being lost to reclaim it, SAS will reduce your fees! This offer is good until December 31, 2011.

    Please join Salinas Animal Services and celebrate Halloween critter-style at the 4th Annual Howl-O-Ween Celebration Saturday, October 29th , 2011 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. The event will include a Pet and Owner Costume Contest at 1:00 p.m., food from the Bakery Station in Salinas, Face Painting by Face Fun, Pet Portraits by Diana Ralph, Kids Activities, Cake Walk, Adoption Specials PLUS a fantastic silent auction to raise money for the animal shelter. Attendees can also help fill the shelter’s trick or treat bag by bringing donations for the shelter such as blankets/towels, canned pet food, treats, toys, etc.


    Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Cesar Chavez Library Expanision and Improvements

    The Cesar Chavez Library, the heart of East Salinas, is expanding to meet the needs of the young and vibrant community it serves. The expansion will add 6,000 square feet to the existing 9,100 square foot library. It includes a Teen Tech Hub with digital arts, a Family Reading area, a Literacy and Homework Center “Where Magic Happens”, an Alisal Local History Room, a Community Meeting Room, a Performance Courtyard, art display areas, added restrooms, and a large entrance lobby.


    Cesar Chavez Library Closure and Program Service Locations

    Salinas Public Libraries is excited to announce that the Cesar Chavez Library Expansion Groundbreaking will take place on October 19th at 2:00 p.m. The Cesar Chavez Library will close its doors on Sunday, October 23rd at 5:00 p.m. prepare for the move and construction that is to expected to take nine to ten months. To continue our service to the community, Library services, programs and hours will continue at the following locations starting no later than Monday, November 14, 2011.


    Libraries Closed for the Holiday

    The Salinas Public Library will be closed Monday, September 5th and Tuesday, September 6th for the Holiday. The John Steinbeck, Cesar Chavez and El Gabilan libraries will reopen for regular hours on Wednesday, September 7th.


    Salinas Airport Manager named Airport Executive of the Year by the Southwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives

    Gary Petersen, Airport Manager and new Director of Public Works for the City of Salinas was recently recognized by the Southwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (SWAAAE) as Airport Executive of the Year. SWAAAE is comprised of Airport Executives and Managers from Arizona, California and Nevada. The award was given at the SWAAAE Summer Conference where Petersen was acknowledged for his 30 years in Airport Management and for his willingness to support the growth and development of his fellow professionals.


    Salinas Public Library to Receive $84,000 Grant from First 5 of Monterey County

    Salinas City Manager Resigns to Assume City Manager Position in Inglewood
    May 25, 2011

    Artie Fields, Salinas City Manager, informed the City Council on May 24, 2011, that he will be resigning his position effective June 30, 2011 to return to Southern California and work as the new City Manager in Inglewood, CA. Mr. Fields has worked for the City of Salinas for three years and previously served as Assistant City Manager in West Covina for 10 years. Mayor Donohue stated that, “Artie provided the necessary leadership during one of the most turbulent financial periods in the City’s history.” Although the economic recession caused City’s revenues to decline more than 21% in the last three years, the City continued to provide critical services to the public. Mr. Fields stated that vision, creativity, and sound financial policy decisions by the Mayor and City Council were essential to moving the City forward during this economic recession. He also stated that the City could not have made it through the crises without the dedication and sacrifice of all City employees.


    National Emergency Medical Services Week Event

    On Friday May 20, 2011, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the City of Salinas Fire Department is working in coordination with the Monterey County Emergency Medical Services Agency, American Medical Response, and the Monterey County Regional Fire District to provide FREE HANDS ONLY CPR training at the Wal-Mart on 1375 North Davis Road as we commemorate National EMS Week.


    UPRR to Close harkins Road/John St. for Rail Work

    Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) is currently working on the company’s rail lines from San Luis Obispo to Watsonville. UPRR is working with City, County, and State agencies to complete the associated street work at the railroad crossings.

    Stolen Puppy at Salinas Animal Services
    May 9, 2011

    Salinas Animal Services had a puppy stolen out of their adoption kennels late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. "Melody" is about a gray and white pit bull puppy that is approximately 7 months old. She had been recently spayed and is microchipped. Melody had developed a post surgery condition that she was receiving treatment for and could worsen if left untreated. It is important that she continues to receive her treatments.

    After a national search netting 34 candidates, City Manager Artie Fields has selected Matt Pressey as the new Finance Director. Pressey has a Bachelors of Arts in Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is a licensed CPA.


    First Mayor’s House Mural Unveiling and Artist Reception

    The City of Salinas, the Oldtown Salinas Association, the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the First Mayor’s House invite all members of the public to a reception for local treasure and Salinas resident, John Cerney. The event is being held April 28, 5-7 pm at the First Mayor’s House. Free parking is available at the Salinas Train Station parking lot in front of the House, at 20 Station Place.


    North Main Street Makeover Completed
    April 25, 2011

    State representatives, the Mayor, and City Council are expected to attend the project completion ceremony for the North Main Street Improvement Project. The project was awarded to Granite Construction Company and called to improve a 1.2- mile stretch of North Main Street between Alvin Drive and Bernal Drive.


    City Receives a $3 Million Grant from Economic Development Administration (EDA)

    Mayor Dennis Donohue and the Salinas City Council, with the support of the Salinas Fire Department, are pleased to announce the opening of the application process for safe and sane fireworks sales by local nonprofit organizations. Applications are available today, March 1, 2011, and must be completed and submitted by Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 4:00 P.M. Applications should be submitted to the Fire Department, 65 West Alisal Street, Salinas, 758-7261.

    Giants World Champion Trophy Tour

    The San Francisco Giants World Champions Trophy will be in Salinas on Thursday, January 27, 2011. The public can view the trophy from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Salinas Sports Complex, 1034 North Main Street. The viewings are free to the public. Fans will have the opportunity to have a professional photo taken and can purchase those photos on-line.
