In 2010 the Salinas Public Library received 573,258 visits. Today with the support of our citizens, and funding from Measure V, residents and visitors alike can be inspired and explore books, music, film, technology, art, language and culture.

With individual and family reading programs in the Literacy Center at the John Steinbeck Library, a Homework Center known as the "Be Creative Room" at the Cesar Chavez Library, tutors available, computers, and GED classes at CHISPA housing and other community sites, as well as free learning materials, we are creating a “Culture of Literacy” for every resident to enjoy.

Through the "Cards to All Students" program, all K-12 students attending any of Salinas’s public school districts receive a library card.

The Digital Arts Lab at the John Steinbeck and Cesar Chavez Libraries features state-of-the-art Apple computers with software to design graphic art, photography, compose music, or make movies and much more. Come edit your movie, your music track or to learn how to do it! There are ongoing instructional classes open to everyone, and Digital Mentors to assist you.

The Teen Lounge at the John Steinbeck Library features new fiction, manga, graphic novels, classics and magazines, as well as Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii that can be viewed, and played on our 52” LCD plasma screen. With the latest video games provided by our local partner, Game Crazy, teenagers and young adults can play their favorite video games, seven days a week from 2:00 p.m. until closing time!

The Bookmobile travels to various Salinas neighborhoods every week to bring books, media and other materials for children and adults to check out. Call the library today at 758-7311 to find out its route and schedule.

Children & Student Programs include bilingual story time and crafts every week to encourage a lifelong love of reading and learning.

The Koha Integrated Online Catalog of materials includes an “Amazon-style” look with photos of new books and the ability for each person to design their own “library shelf.” Check your account online, put items on hold, extend your checkout times, or find out about an authors work. Whether you’re at home or an Internetcafé, Koha is available to everyone, anytime, day or night!
