Senior Programs
The City of Salinas is dedicated to encouraging seniors (50 and over) to foster a healthy and active lifestyle. This program provides seniors with a time to socialize, receive a nutritious meal, and participate in a variety of recreational opportunities such as Bingo, Arts & Crafts Workshops and Dance Classes. Computer access is also available to the seniors during specified times.
The Senior Program meets at the Firehouse Recreation Center, 1330 E. Alisal St.,
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Firehouse Recreation Center & Senior Program
The senior programs offered at the Firehouse Recreation Center include Senior Nutrition, Leisure Activities, Education Classes, Social Services, Senior/ Adult Trips, and Volunteer Opportunities. The Firehouse Senior Program works closely with a number of local non-profit agencies to provide the best service to its seniors.
The Firehouse is located next to the Fairways Golf Course and Gene Robertson Baseball Field. It houses a recreation building with a multi-use room and 3 classrooms, a courtyard with a gazebo and a picnic table, playground apparatus, basketball half court and ample parking.
Senior Lunch Program
The Senior Lunch Program is sponsored by City of Salinas & Monterey County Area Agency on Aging. Meals are served Monday - Friday form 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Cost is a donation of $2.50 per person per meal for seniors 62 years of age and older and $4.00 per person per meal for seniors under 62 years of age. Reservations are required a day in advance. Call (831) 775-4286 to make your reservation. A hot, well-balanced meal is prepared by the Alisal School District Food Service kitchen for the Firehouse seniors to enjoy with friends. Join us for a great meal, good company and various activities.
Alisal School District Kitchen
Plans, prepares and delivers the meals to the Firehouse for seniors. Also sends out birthday cake once a month for birthday club.
Alliance on Aging
Representative at the Firehouse twice a month to provide information and referral assistance to seniors; provides health insurance counseling through Health Insurance Counseling Advocacy (HICAP) program, Tax preparation assistance for seniors, homeowners and renters rebates and other service not held at the Firehouse.
Area Agency on Aging
Provides funding for meal program, set standards for lunch program, monitors program standards, provides nutrition information and speakers to seniors.
Basic Computer Lab for Seniors
Relax and take advantage of using our Internet access. Computers are available to public use on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Call (831) 775-4285 for more information.
Bingo
Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for a friendly game of bingo; prizes will vary. Mondays and Fridays, 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Birthday Club
Celebrate your special day at the Firehouse with friends. We will wish you a merry day with a piece of birthday cake, singing, and plenty of goods laughs. Birthdays celebrated on the last day of the month. Call our staff at (831) 775-4285 to tell us your birthday.
Coffee Club
Stop by Monday - Friday mornings from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and have a great cup of coffee and pastry to start your day. We offer good friendship and other activities.
Firehouse Nutrition Site Council
The Firehouse Nutrition Site Council meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 12:15 p.m. This is a chance to voice concerns and/or request activities for the Firehouse Seniors. Each meeting is informative with senior concerns and activities.
Food Donations
Senior volunteers will bring food donations and bread when available from various stores
in the area and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Monterey County. Days and items will vary, however, Tuesdays and Thursdays are good days to check with us about food donations of bread, bakery goods, and other items. The volunteers also pick up bakery items from Nob Hill.
Local food stores
Bakery donations from local stores such as Nob Hill Foods are collected by volunteers and distributed to the seniors.
Monterey County Food Bank
In partnership with Area Agency on Aging, senior volunteers are able to go to the Food Bank and collect food items for the senior to supplement their grocery cost.
Salinas Air Show
Provides free entrance tickets to the annual Air Show.
Salinas Rodeo Committee
Provides free vouchers for seniors to enjoy the annual Rodeo.
Seasonal Celebrations
The seniors enjoy monthly special events usually with a holiday theme. Special décor is used for the event, entertainment is provided, and a unique meal is prepared. These events can be during the daily luncheon program or on a separate day.
Yoga Class
Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Come in and meet our yoga instructor. Get re-energized from a morning of relaxing yoga.
Municipal Pool
