Salinas is a member of Sister Cities International, Inc., http://www.sister-cities.org, whose mission is to “promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, & cooperation - one individual, one community at a time.” Created by President Eisenhower in 1956, the Sister Cities’ association enables communities to “creatively learn, work, and solve problems through cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional, and technical exchanges and projects.” Sister Cities International’s membership also includes community groups interested in promoting people-to-people exchanges.
Salinas’ four sister city relationships were created and maintained in collaboration with local residents with ties to these communities:
- Cebu, Philippines, established on May 18, 1964 by Resolution No. 523
- Kushikino, Japan, established by minute order on June 11, 1979 and reorganized as Ichikikushikino on August 4, 2006
- Jerecuaro, Mexico, established on December 3, 1996 by Resolution No. 16066
- Guanajuato, Mexico, established on November 6, 2007 by Resolution No. 19358
