October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer that affects both men and women. The City of Salinas Code Enforcement Division is showing support by wearing pink "Josie Strong" breast cancer awareness shirts for the month of October, paying tribute to former Certified Code Enforcement Officer Josie Monsivais who lost her battle with cancer in May 2018. Josie served with the City for over 12 years, beginning her career in the Salinas Police Department as a Community Service Officer before transitioning to Code Enforcement. She was enthusiastic, eager to learn and developed the first Exceptional Residence Recognition Award presented in the Laurel Heights area in 2016. Josie made extra efforts to educate the neighborhood on various City ordinances and showed them how to comply to make their neighborhood safe and enjoyable.
