As of January 1st, 2022, assembly bill 793 (Ting and Irwin, Chapter 115, Statutes of 2020) requires plastic-bottled beverage sold by a beverage manufacturer in California must contain at least 15% of post-consumer recycled plastic.

Manufacturers who do not reach the threshold on recycled plastic content will receive a penalty of twenty cents per pound of post-consumer resin (PCR) short of the target.

Money received from these fines will go towards recycling initiatives, collection and processing of plastic bottles.
