Over forty City of Salinas staff representing all departments have registered to participate in a five-part virtual learning series designed to provide a space for government institutions and community leaders to form a shared understanding of racism. This innovative training series begins in August of 2020 for the Monterey County regional government institutions and community leaders working together to advance racial equity in our region. The intention is to increase capacity for racial equity through shared solutions between government/systems and the community. The training was co-developed by community and government with support from Race Forward and Facilitating Power.

The City of Salinas has been engaged in Governing for Race Equity trainings and applications since 2014. Salinas is a nationally recognized leader in working together with community and internally to train in and apply governing for race equity strategies. In 2019 the City of Salinas joined the cross-sector collaborate, “Towards A Racially Equitable Monterey County” (TREMC) along with the County of Monterey, Monterey County Office of Education and Building Healthy Communities. TREMC is an ecosystem approach to racial equity, and is comprised of stakeholders in government, community organizing and philanthropy to deepen a racially equitable systems change practice for more equitable outcomes for all people in Monterey County.

This pilot learning and implementation cohort is an opportunity to have a shared understanding of structural racism and racial equity. This training series expands the training curriculum used by Race Forward’s Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE). These monthly 2-hour sessions will run from August - December via Zoom.
